Games of Strategy and Capstone

If one were to walk around the lobby and study areas at Owen the past couple of days, and I suppose over the course of the next week, one will find all the first years (broken down in teams of course), working on the core Strategy Capstone assignment. Now as I had mentioned before, I tend to enjoy these simulation games. And this particular one in Strategy more so than others. It is the culmination of all our learning through the Mod, and it truly requires that a team break down its members into functional areas – Operations, Finance, accounting, marketing etc. and come up with a long term strategy that will last you through eight gruelling rounds. And unlike the Supply Chain game, you’re truly competing against the rest of the teams in your industry. The Honor Code essentially prohibits you from colluding with your opponents, so no price fixing is allowed. In about 2 hours, we should find out the results of the the Second round. The first round was a blood-bath, in my industry, as everyone pretty much tried to capture the same segment of the industry – we’re designing Sensors, and each round represents one fiscal year. I think at the end of this round, we should be able to get a better feel for what everyone else is thinking. So maybe those of us who have taken Game Theory (I haven’t yet!), should be at a distinct advantage. Maybe!

On a secondary note, the upcoming week is going to be a rough one for me. With presentations due, and a BIG mid-term – I mean that literally as we have had over 500 pages of reading to do for this class using terminology I didn’t even understand – I can see a number of all-niters coming up. The good part, Spring Break is around the corner and that means our trip to India for Project Pyramid. More on that shortly.
