Looking Back at Making the B-school Decision

It has been a while since my last post and I have been thinking a lot about how my experience at Owen has netted out and if it has met my expectations from when I first chose the program. It is year two, semester two (well, in about a week it will be) and I can't help but think about the choice I made. It should be no surprise to most of you that I do not regret my decision and, in fact, I am very happy with it. I think that is because I spoke to so many MBAs about what they looked for in a program and why those things are important. I was able to benefit from their advice and choose accordingly.

I think (for what my advice is worth), it is time to pay it forward. Everyone says to figure out what is important to you and then choose a program and for most "what is important" means being able to find a job after school at an amazing company or pursuing a program that specializes in one's particular interest. All of that is important but some things to consider include the flexibility of the program, if you are interested in making an impact on your surrounding community, the culture (cut-throat, not so much or in between), emphasis on team or individual work, travel opportunities, the opportunity to forge your own path, and being able to easily move back home after you are done.

Graduating at a bad time…again…

As we all know that the economy is not at its best at the moment, I cannot help but think back to when I graduated college. It was 2002 and the recession was at its worst. Finding a job was difficult and as I had little experience (other than a few summer internships and a high school job), I ended up looking for about nine months before I found something. That was definitely not ideal and I hope to never have that happen again.

Facing a similar situation again, now that I will be graduating from b-school is disappointing but this time things are a little different. This time I have about four and a half years of experience before coming to school and a great internship on my resume. Given that I want to start a career in brand management and I didn’t have direct brand management experience before coming to school, having had an internship at Unilever has helped open some doors for me. I am much better at interviewing than I once was and have many more job search tools than  I had in the past. Still, though, I think there is one thing that is most important: being persistent. My dad always tells me that looking for a new job is a full time job on its own and I can’t agree more. It is tough and sometimes daunting but very necessary. This time around, I have new attitude about looking for a job – though a rigorous process, the possibilities are endless and it is exciting to think about where I could end up!

What I learned this summer….

In past blogs, I talked about my internship and the process, what I didn’t talk about is what the experience taught me. Here goes.

Initially, I expected that the whole point of my internship was to figure out if brand management is really for me and if the company I was at was a great fit. What I didn’t realize is that internship was really about much more than that. I learned about what I like and don’t like in a company (after being in school for a year, some of the things I look for are different than what they once were) and I learned about some of the things that are important for me to consider when looking for a full time job.

Being in Nashville for the last year and in NYC for three months this summer made me realize that I am at that point in life where the next place (city) I am in is somewhere I would like to be for a long time. I have lived in plenty of places over the last 6 years and I have loved every place I have been but what’s next and what does this mean in terms of my full time job search? Well, it means I have some things to think about before I make any decisions.

Week 1, Year 2

I am officially one week in to my second year and I am reminded of something I heard from last year’s second year class (Class of 2008). I was told that although we expect to be less busy as second years, we aren’t. We have a less stressful set of classes (hopefully) and definitely a better schedule since the workload shouldn’t be as crazy as first semester in year one, but it is a different kind of busy.

This week, I found myself busier than ever and homework wasn’t the problem; all of my extracurricular activities had me running around. Don’t get me wrong, it is great to be involved and I enjoy it…just wasn’t expecting it to be so crazy so fast! I think this is the issue for every second year- you sign up for stuff in year one because you want to make a difference and you think you will have time for it all and then you get to year two and realize you have to learn how to manage your time again!

It is good to be back in school but it is amazing what you forget during the three months off between years. I guess I am back to scheduling my entire life in outlook again! =)

Did I really just do that?

Last Thursday I gave my final presentation and now, it is that time to hurry up and wait to hear about an offer!  I had 10 weeks from start to finish to get up to speed with my brand (for those of you who don’t remember,my primary concentration is marketing), understand my project and get it done. Most of us had to do this. In week five, I was talking to the other interns about this and a friend of mine from Columbia said my favorite thing I have heard all summer, "I am so amazed by the me five weeks from now!" I have to say that she was right…I really am amazed at all of us interns 5 weeks later!!!
