A Mid-Mod Analysis

It's hard to believe, but we are halfway through Mod I. This brings an equal amount of joy (only four more weeks of suffering through finance) and fear (only four more weeks to prepare for finals) and the onset of the mid-term grades discussion. How am I doing so far? How am I doing compared to my peers? Can you tell after four weeks?

I don't know if that applies to my classes, but I can easily analyze my performance on the other non-GPA aspects of Owen. Using a standard A-F scale, here's how I would rate myself.

Current Events - C-
I used to be a huge consumer of the news - from politics to sports, if it was written, I read it. If it was broadcast, I saw it. But, I've said sayonara to those days. The magazines are piling up, and I have no intention of doing more than flipping through the occasional BusinessWeek just so I know what everyone is talking about. I've managed to stay somewhat up to date on business news, mostly because you can't avoid it in b-school. The WSJ is a necessary evil. But, I didn't watch any football this weekend, which makes me sad. I even skipped a trip to Notre Dame because I had to study. And I have no idea what is going on in Nashville. It's easy to get sucked into the b-school bubble, and I'm trapped in it right now.

Overall Health - B
I have so far maintained a pretty strict gym schedule, which is quite possibly the only thing keeping me sane. There is something about lifting weights and listening to Rage Against the Machine that calms me down. It's hard to work in the time, but it's worth the extra hour in the long run. I've also managed to avoid the common cold or any other lurking threat.

Relationships - C-
I have a wonderful boyfriend, and he has been very supportive of graduate school since the beginning. However, he's three hours away, so we are continuing our relationship via technology. When we do talk, I'm usually cranky (because I'm tired), frustrated (because I still cannot compute free cash flows) or crying (just because ... that's happened a lot lately). Suffice it to say I will not win the girlfriend of the year award. When we do get to see each other, I'm constantly on a schedule and stressed out about an upcoming exam or quiz. The concept of chilling out is lost on me, and it's hard for him to understand that. Luckily he's been patient so far, it's just up to me to remember how to relax.

Sleep - F
Goodbye are the days of getting the required 7-8 hours of sleep. During the week, I'm averaging about 5 hours of sleep. Over the weekend, I might be getting more hours, but sleeping off a beer-drenched Thursday night doesn't really count. For the most part, I don't have time to sleep! Think about how much I could be accomplishing if I weren't sleeping! I know sleep is really important, and I try to set a reasonable bedtime, but it never works. I think I need a sleep tutor.

Social Life - B-
I'm a naturally social person, and I crave extracurricular activities. However, I've confined myself to school and work six nights a week, which means that one very special evening every week, I blow off steam. It's like being in a cage all week and then getting one night out. MBA students like to party, and when it's limited to every so often, you can imagine what happens. My friends at Owen are fun, outgoing, spontaneous and a generally friendly bunch to be around. I just wish I had more time to spend with them outside of Owen.

As you can see, the "other" parts of my life have taken a back seat to Mod I. But there is room for improvement, and it's a constant balancing act. I'm learning as I go, and I'm positive that soon, the workload will become more manageable and I'll have more time to enjoy life outside of Owen.
