Preparing for B-School
I thought I would pass some advice along that I've gotten from current students and professors to prepare for business school. Depending on previous experiences you've had there are other things you could do to prepare, but these are some generic ones.
1. READ. I hear from everyone to read The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times and other similar publications. Depending on what your concentration will be there also might be some good books out there that can give you a feel for what the current situation is in market, advertising, the music industry, etc. This is a must though.
2. BRUSH UP...most importantly on your math skills. While the path and concentration you choose may not rely heavily on these skills, a couple of the core classes you must take will. If you have an engineering background you're probably already ready, but for those who don't some simple finance books should do the trick. Also ask some Owen professors for good recommendations.
3. UPDATE. Your resume and interview skills. One of the first things you should focus on when you start at Owen is finding that internship. While it helps to have some idea of what you want to do, talking to fellow students and the staff in the CMC can help you figure that out. But in order to devote more time to that aspect, have your resume updated and ready to go. If you've been in the same job for awhile it would also be good to stage a couple of mock interviews with some friends in order to get you back into that mindset of how to handle an interview.
4. RELAX. Seriously, the most important one. Every single student I talked to said the best thing they did/should have done before starting at Owen is taken at least two weeks to relax. Once you start at Owen it seems like you won't stop until Christmas due to the mods, internship searches, orientation and so forth. So take some time and relax and enjoy doing nothing - because you won't get to for a very long time.
Hope you're all doing well out there in cyber world. Make it happen! - Colleen
