Is it really over?

The Emory team celebrating their win after an intense competition.

It seems like everybody is feeling a little nostalgic although the competition barely lasted two days. Many new friendships were formed and instances of inspirational teamwork were easy to be found. The teams were all professional and a had great case to present in terms of their recommendations. Spare a thought for the judges for whom it would not have been an easy decision deciding the final order of the teams. Each team was better than the last one and the bar was always much higher than anyone ever expected it to be. Watching the teams present was a learning experience in itself. It was an inspiration to see that all the hard work, sweat, and toil was worth it all in the end. All the teams that participated impressed the judges and everyone fortunate enough to have been able to watch them.
The organizers did a great job of making a very difficult challenge look so easy. Everything was like clockwork. Almost everything was on time or without much delay. It was easy to see why Associate Dean Jon Lehman thought the second year student organizers should not be allowed to graduate next year so they could organize another great HCCC next year.
It's been an absolutely fantastic and a most memorable competition for us and we hope you enjoyed it too.
See you at HCCC 2009!

HCCC 2008: Final Round Live Blog

8:05 AM We are at the start of the final day of the second annual Human Capital Case Competition. We will be live blogging this event for you till the final winner is announced. Right now we are minutes away from finding out who the 3 finalists are going to be.

8:18 AM The student ambassadors from all teams were just thanked on stage individually for their contribution. Now all the organizers are being thanked.

8:22 AM The organizers have been thanked amidst great applause for their wonderful work, especially chief organizer Bella Parekh. We are now at the point where the judges are giving their general recommendations to all the teams seated in the auditorium.

8:30 AM The judges tips are fantastic. Take for example the one that says teams made recommendations for each department to implement in the case competition but could have also suggested time lines for implementation of each recommendation.
According to the judges the level of preparation and professionalism among the teams has increased over last year. Kudos to all the teams for their remarkable performances!

8:33 AM
...and the final 3 teams are:
College Hustle
Cowboy Boogie
Vegas Boogie

8:40 AM The 3 teams have been sent to their prep rooms escorted by their ambassadors. They will begin their final presentations shortly and OwenBloggers will be live blogging it for you as it is happening.

9:30 AM We are about to start with the final three presentations. Everybody is in place. The first team to present is going to be Team College Hustle. They are in the auditorium now. There is pin drop silence here.

10:13 AM Team College Hustle just finished an excellent presentation that held the audience captive for half an hour. The judges had some tough real world questions for them post-presentation but they handled them well. They have set the bar very high for the teams that follow.

10:30 AM Team Cowboy Boogie is now entering the auditorium. The presentation is already up on projector. Here we go!

11:15 AM Team Cowboy Boogie just finished their presentation and Q&A. They had the judges excited by their idea of voluntary executive pay cuts. That made half the Q&A session. The last presentation begins in 15 minutes and I can hardly wait for it to get started. The presentations have just been so absorbing.

11:31 AM Team Vegas Boogie have their presentation up, thanks to their student ambassador Manan. They are the last team to present and there is huge expectation and anticipation amongst the audience members and the judges. The presentations have just been so fantastic so far.

11:31 AM OK the last and final team just finished their Q&A session which has clearly left us all impressed with their expertise of the case and their understanding of the importance of Human Capital issues in businesses. The judges are now filing out and will soon have their final decision for us. We are waiting...and we are breaking for lunch now.

1:42 PM The winners have just been announced and the number one team is Team Vegas Boogie. They are the team from Emory University and had everyone buzzing about their brilliant Q&A session and not surprisingly they have won this competition.
Team CowBoy Boogie (Cornell) got second prize and Team College Hustle (Purdue) finished third.
Our congratulations to all of them!

Almost time for the first presentation

Boot Scootin' Boogie, the first team to present in the HCCC 2008 starts at 1:00 PM after nearly 3 hours of prep and practice time. Their (code) name deliberately does not have their school name so the judges do not know which school they represent. Once team Boot Scootin' Boogie are done a team will present every hour for forty-five minutes. A total of 10 teams have been invited to present.
Just to challenge the teams a little extra and to make things more interesting for everybody, a surprise twist was introduced to the case early this morning. While that last minute change would have forced the teams to change plans and do away with weeks of research, it will be interesting to see how teams respond to this. Almost everybody seems to have wrapped up lunch and while the teams and judges get ready for each other I will head out to capture these moments on camera and post them here for you shortly.
