Happy New Year!
End of the year is such a wonderful time. There are plenty of stories surfacing but it seems that every one is to busy with holiday and party preparations to notice much of it. In the past couple of days allegations were raised and a corruption/bribery investigation began into some of the world’s largest pharma corporations, SCHIP went nowhere, bedbug made a spectacular return, a Central European country is facing doctor shortage, because EU regulations state that a doctor can stop refuse being scheduled for more then 48 hours a week, and so many other fascinating stories. And this is just health care related!
Newspapers and news websites are full of articles summarizing the year, from the good to the bad and the ugly. Or how the world celebrated coming of the New Year. I celebrated with about 20 thousand other people in the city center at a concert
organized by the city. Just about every major (and some minor) cities organize festivities. It’s a safe and, for the participants, free way to spend New Year’s Eve. Even though some people found a way around the alcohol ban, I saw very few really drunk.
One of the greatest things last night was public transport that ran all non stop. The Metro ran every 10-15 min through out the night, even though normally it stops running after midnight, the night busses had about the same frequency, which is twice as often as usual, and even some of the trams were about, an unusual sight between 11 pm and 5 am. Over all, it was great fun and even the low clouds that covered the sky (and fireworks) didn’t put me or anyone else off.
But as Bill Vaughan once said “An optimist stay s up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.”
So as the New Year is dawning, I wanted to wish everyone in an MBA program to quickly find a job of their dreams. May new opportunities open themselves to you, and for you not to be afraid to take this new road. For those that are planning on joining MBA ranks, I wish you persistence and determination: you will need both to survive – this is only a jungle if you make it so. And to all I wish health, everything else depends on it. Happy New Year.
(Sorry, pictures are from my phone, so the fireworks don't look as spectacular as they should.)
