LiveBlogging: Net Impact Volunteer Meeting

Photo 8

Ok, so this is more of a humorous post than anything but here we are at the last Net Impact volunteer meeting.

Things are moving along at a feverish pace getting ready for the main events. You'll hear a lot more later but let's just say this - big congrats go out to James and the team for a great effort, thus far.

Organize Your Life : Vandy Folder Icon

In business school, one of the things you will be amazed by is how quickly your computer desktop is consumed in a sea of documents. If you're not careful, your once pristine desktop can start to resemble a pack of chiclets.

This isn't just an organizational thing, however; its a mental health thing. By clearing your computer desktop, you can give yourself a little bit of calm in an otherwise, hectic life. Don't believe me? Try it!

Take all of the files currently not filed away on your desktop and put them in a folder labeled "to be filed" or "random." Then re-examine your desktop and feel how much calmer you are. In fact, I am going to help you out a bit by making the folder that much easier to access. Below is an icon I created that helps me ID the folders that have my school work in them.

Vandy-Icon

Right Click & Download The Folder Icon Here

Not only does it look fairly cool, it helps me quickly find my work when I am racing to...oh, I don't know...complete my business plan for Leadership Communications?

PS - if you need help replacing your regular icon with this one,

OwenBloggers: The Wallpaper

This past weekend, one of us was walking around the HCCC trying to capture some candid shots for our coverage.

As he turned a corner and snapped a shot of one of the competing teams, they turned around with a shock. Upon seeing that he was with OB.com, they lamented "Oh...its the bloggers." I thought the quote was memorable enough to warrant etching in stone.  Unfortunately, I am fresh out of marble so I captured the sentiment in a desktop wallpaper.

Now you too can download it and make your computer look like the guys with the cameras.  Enjoy!

"...I have an M.B.A.," or not?

MainRight before MOD 1 began, a fellow first year posed an interesting question: Which would you rather do; have a permanent mullet or have to go around saying "...I have an M.B.A." after every sentence?

Not withstanding a couple of interesting evenings out on the town where we tried this out, it's an interesting question. One that was, in fact, posed to Owen's own Joyce Rothenberg in today's Wall Street Journal.

Ok...maybe not in the exact wording but you get the idea. A reader asked if they should use "M.B.A." as a credential, for instance after their name on their business card. Here's a snippet of what she said:

"I wouldn't recommend it to our students," says Joyce Rothenberg, director of the career management center at Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management in Tennessee. "While an important professional degree, it is not like a certification or a license."

What do you think; Is what we are doing here enough or do we need letters after our names?

What a competition

Img 7694-3

As I have been deep in the weeds of video and audio production, I can tell you that - even more than usual - Owen is glowing as the epicenter of human capital MBA talent.

The competition is fierce, the presentations are brilliant and Susan, Sam, Edmundo and I are furiously trying to keep up with the pace of things .

In case you are having trouble keeping up here is where you can find things:

Marketing Immersion Day: Lunch For My Ad Execs, Whiskey For My MBAs

After the heavily quantitative MOD, I couldn’t wait for the Marketing Immersion Day short course. An entire day of marketing geek-dom topped off with a trip to a distillery; what’s not to love?

Img 7392

We started out with a lecture and Q&A session with Jamie Dunham, Managing Director for BOHAN Brand Consulting. Now, I have to admit that at first, my expectations that she would really shed new light on the topic of marketing were limited. After all, with orientation week and the marketing symposium, haven’t we covered all the basics?

The answer was: apparently, not yet.

Img 7390

Jamie’s presentation really ended up doing a great job detailing the role that brands play in consumer’s lives including ways in which companies do and do not have control over their brands. We were even prepped for many of the questions we would face in marketing interviews.

After profiling some of her favorite campaigns and fielding some interesting questions about advertising strategy, we all hit the boxed lunches and headed for the immersive part of the day; a tour of the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg.

Img 7475

I’ll let the photos tell the story but it really was a great time. We found out a lot about the corporate history that makes up the Jack Daniel’s brand as well as witnessed their efforts to extend their brand into more premium whiskeys.

It was also particular treat to get a preview of the marketing faculty. This included Jennifer Escalas, Dawn Iacobucci and, of course, Steve Hoeffler. Given that Professor Hoeffler asked no less than four times regarding the purchase of an entire barrel of whiskey, I think we can safely infer that the class of 2009 is going to like him.

Img 7450

Also, when pressed about any tips for success he could give for the students about to take his class, Hoeffler replied; "be sure to take any feedback {he} can give you."

You can see more photos of the trip on our Flickr Account

PS: In that spirit…OwenBloggers would like to encourage you to leave US plenty of feedback trough the comments section of the blog.

“It's only been how long?”

This past weekend I got the chance to go back to Washington, DC for a couple of days. Though I was primarily there for a wedding, I made it a point to reconnect with my group of friends outside the festivities and catch up on what’s happened since I left.

Over a casual dinner, I remarked how much my worldview has shifted since moving to Nashville and starting classes at Owen. Upon hearing this, one of my friends turned to me and said, “Dude, you’ve only been gone three months!”

At first, I seriously thought he was mistaken. After glancing at my calendar though, I realized what he said was true.

Though it’s hard to get a sense of it when you are inside Management Hall and neck-deep in statistics notes, this place really does change you. It expands your view of what it means to be in business and what it means to be a leader. Furthermore, it challenges you to expand what you value in your life.

The wedding turned out beautifully and I am so glad I got this chance to get some perspective. Though there are one or two exams left before we can officially call our first MOD completed, its good to know that this place does indeed help you to “shape your world.”

Exam anxiety leads to the strangest things

It goes without saying that exam time is not exactly the most relaxing time of the MOD. In addition to the normal strains and pressures of our lives, we get to dive into our mounds of notes only to emerge to reacquaint ourselves with the wonders of coffee.

The only good news about this is that after this, we get a well-deserved break. Such is life at Owen; you have to work hard before you play hard.

Until then, however, its good to know that some of us like to relieve pressures in different ways. This is probably the last post I'll make until my Finance Exam is over. Hopefully though, this thought I came up with in the stat review session will keep us laughing through the next couple of days:

Good Luck Everyone & Let Stat Cat Be With You!!!!
