After the heavily quantitative MOD, I couldn’t wait for the Marketing Immersion Day short course. An entire day of marketing geek-dom topped off with a trip to a distillery; what’s not to love?
We started out with a lecture and Q&A session with Jamie Dunham, Managing Director for BOHAN Brand Consulting. Now, I have to admit that at first, my expectations that she would really shed new light on the topic of marketing were limited. After all, with orientation week and the marketing symposium, haven’t we covered all the basics?
The answer was: apparently, not yet.
Jamie’s presentation really ended up doing a great job detailing the role that brands play in consumer’s lives including ways in which companies do and do not have control over their brands. We were even prepped for many of the questions we would face in marketing interviews.
After profiling some of her favorite campaigns and fielding some interesting questions about advertising strategy, we all hit the boxed lunches and headed for the immersive part of the day; a tour of the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg.
I’ll let the photos tell the story but it really was a great time. We found out a lot about the corporate history that makes up the Jack Daniel’s brand as well as witnessed their efforts to extend their brand into more premium whiskeys.
It was also particular treat to get a preview of the marketing faculty. This included Jennifer Escalas, Dawn Iacobucci and, of course, Steve Hoeffler. Given that Professor Hoeffler asked no less than four times regarding the purchase of an entire barrel of whiskey, I think we can safely infer that the class of 2009 is going to like him.
Also, when pressed about any tips for success he could give for the students about to take his class, Hoeffler replied; "be sure to take any feedback {he} can give you."
