When it comes to the Owen Community - It is a small world, after all

DSC02830.JPG

Not to let Sam have all of the fun on the blog this break, I thought I would post in with an observation: Owen is everywhere!

Currently, I am on vacation with the family on a small island in the US Virgin Islands called St. John. Not only did I bump into Ann Magruder at the Atlanta Airport on the way down, look who I found at a local watering hole: the admissions department's very own Lauren Rowe (and Hubby).

This just goes to prove that at Owen, we may be a small community but we're a global one.

Oh...and about the photo - thanks to the fact I was trying to go totally sans laptop this trip - I had to settle for this shot of the actual photo that I took with the Treo. As soon as I get back to reality - it will be replaced with the full resolution one.

Trying to evaluate Delta's queing efficency around the holidays

Right now I am in line to check my bags at the atlanta airport. This photo is indicative of the mayhem that is currently permeating the Delta side of the terminal.

You can see that they have slanted the check in desks instead of one flat check-in counter. I am trying to reach back to queing theory in order to figure out how this helps speed throughput to check your bags in. No signs? No discernable lines?

How does this make sense?

Proper English? w00t, Yeah!

For the second year in a row, Merriam-Webster's dictionary has decided to tip their hat to the growing terminology of the online community. On Tuesday they announced that online readers had selected the word "w00t" as the "Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year 2007"

For those of you who may not be familiar with it, Merriam-Webster has kindly defined "w00t" as:

1. w00t (interjection)
expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word "yay"

In addition to an expression of geeky glee, the word also happens to be the name of a very cool online shopping site: woot.com.

This momentous selection is just another sign that the American lexicon is increasingly defined, not by scholars, but by raving lunatic bloggers like us. For my part, I feel it is my duty to find at least three ways to use our new, best hope for eloquent expression...starting with my Marketing Management exam.

"w00t!" Hoeffler!

Don't think of it as losing a Patrick. Think of it as gaining a Sig-O.

It is my extreme pleasure to congratulate fellow '09-er, Patrick Allen and his now fiance, Molly. Patrick proposed to Molly just a few short hours before the Owen Holiday Party, giving us yet one more reason to celebrate.

In true Patrick style, the ring is absolutely gorgeous...oh, and so is Molly. If you see him around, make sure to offer your well wishes or condolences, depending on your views of the institution of marriage.

ps - props to lisa for the picture!

Oh, The Things We Thought We Knew - Part II

Staring down the barrel of another set of exams, it's amazing how fast this MOD went by compared to MOD I. I have no doubt that this feeling is shared by our second year counterparts now that they have a mere 5 months left before they unleash their ferocity upon an unsuspecting business world. (If someone has the exact day count, feel free to put it on the comments section)

This MOD was definitely different with less quant work but MUCH more written analysis. In fact, I knew I had adjusted to the MOD when I looked at my 10-page Qualitative Marketing Research assignment and thought "Is that all?"

As I did last MOD at this time, and as Professor Mumin Kurtulus would say, "What have we really learned here this MOD?"

  • Nashville weather is ADD. One day it will be sunny and 65, the next day you will be chipping ice off your laptop bag. Pack Accordingly.
  • Luke Froeb's lessons will get inside your head, even if you don't want them to. Yesterday I was stuck in line at Kroger and I found myself calculating the Nash equilibrium of switching check-out lanes.
  • The "Beer Game" is fun but doesn't actually have any beer...However, get someone else's cell phone to ring in Mumin's class and its a whole new ball-game.
  • No matter how good at marketing you think you are, Steve Hoeffler will find a way to prove you wrong.
  • Don't let on that you know how to use a video camera...trust me on this one.

And, of course, here are some select shots to remember this MOD by:
