Healthcare resources out on the interwebs

Regardless of whether you think its a big truck on which you can dump stuff or a series of tubes, the interweb has a few great resources for those of us interested in healthcare. For that matter, they're pretty good resources for everyone, Healthcare MBA or not (who is it that said we pay more for healthcare than we do for steel in the construction of a new car?).  I know my man Tyler "Mr. Vanderbilt Healthcare MBA" Richardson has written about healthcare-specific websites and blogs before, but I thought I'd add my $0.02 to the discussion.

Every day the Advisory Board sends out a Daily Briefing email. Billed as "The nation's healthcare news in five minutes," the Daily Briefing hits pretty much all of the day's (week's, month's, year's) big topics in healthcare. Today's Brief has pieces on the US News ranking of Best Children's Hospitals in the US (Vanderbilt Children's Hospital came in at #23), Mitt Romney's health reform proposal, a CBO report about health costs, and a few others. I get mine every day right around noon, complete with HTML email AND a PDF attachment.

You can sign up for the Advisory Board on their website (select "Member Login" and then "New User"). I used my "@vanderbilt.edu" address to sign up (not sure if the Owen email address would have worked).

I also follow a few different healthcare-related blogs, including:

If you have suggestions for other blogs people might want to follow, please leave them in the comments.

Weekly Roundup

What are 3 reasons you picked Owen over all the other schools to which you applied?

  1. The Healthcare program

Given my background in basic science, it seemed only logical to me to combine my past science experience with a little bit of business training and try to leverage those things against future employment.  I had talked to a few people, each and every one of which said that I should look into the Healthcare MBA program (which is actually a Healthcare specialization on top of a "normal" Vanderbilt MBA ... more on that in a future post).  A few emails later I was having coffee with Jon Lehman (current Dean of Students, former Dean of the Healthcare program) to discuss it further.  The rest, as they say, is history.

  2. The Vanderbilt name

As you might have noticed, I have a bit of history with this place.  I did my undergrad here, I did my fellowship here, and now I'm doing my MBA here.  Obviously I think there's something to the Vanderbilt name.  So much so that I chose it over one or two other fine institutions.  (I don't know, however, if I'm a "Double Dore" or a "Triple Dore").

  3. Nashville

I am and always have been a huge fan of Nashville.  There's an incredible amount of things to do - outdoor type stuff (hiking, biking, etc), great music (both country and real music), good restaurants, major league sports, and all the other things people mention when they talk about how many great things there are to do in a city.  Plus, the summers aren't really all that hot and the winters aren't really all that cold.  Oh, and there's a really cool bar only 384 feet from the front door of the school.

I should mention that this post was adapted from an earlier post of mine.
